Seven injured in W Cape crash 2014-11-29 13:01

Johannesburg - Paramedics said on Saturday that seven people were injured when a truck collided with five vehicles on Sir Lowry's Pass near Cape Town.
The truck's brakes allegedly failed causing it to plough through other vehicles, said ER24's Russel Meiring.
Three people were critically injured. Two of them had to be freed from the wreckages with the jaws-of-life, while one was airlifted to hospital.
Paramedics treated patients for their injuries before transporting them to nearby hospitals.

Qaeda moved US hostage before Yemen raid

Qaeda moved US hostage before Yemen raid
Aden - Al-Qaeda militants holding an American journalist in Yemen moved him and two other foreign hostages just days before a raid to free him, a Yemeni defence ministry website said.
The journalist as well as a British national and a South African are among several hostages held by al-Qaeda in the violence-wracked country, according to the ministry's 26Sep.net news website.
(Hani Mohammed, AP)On Tuesday, Yemeni special forces, said to have been backed by US commandos, raided an al-Qaeda hideout in Hajr As-Saghir, in the southeastern province of Hadramawt, to free the captives.
Eight hostages - six Yemenis, a Saudi and an Ethiopian - were freed in the operation, in which seven gunmen were killed, Yemeni security officials said at the time.
The ministry website reported late on Wednesday that hours before the raid the militants moved the American journalist, the Briton and the South African.
A Yemeni hostage and a fifth person believed to be Turkish were also moved, said the report, quoting a member of the Yemeni special forces who had spoken to one of the freed hostages.
The special forces member was identified as Abu Maruf, but the website provided no further details or official confirmation.
The New York Times, quoting American and Yemeni officials, said on Wednesday that US Special Operations commandos carried out a raid with Yemeni troops to try to free the American captive.
"But when the commandos swooped in on the mountain cave where they believed the American was being held, they found eight other hostages, including six Yemenis, but not the American," it said.
The newspaper added that it had initially withheld the information "at the request of the Obama adminstration", out of concern for the safety of the American hostage.
The Times said it was withholding the name of the captive journalist.
Abu Maruf told 26Sep.net that the operation followed intelligence information that al-Qaeda militants were holding hostages, "including a number of foreigners."
Al-Qaeda is active in southern and eastern Yemen, especially in Hadramawt, where the authority of the central government is weak.
A South African teacher, Pierre Korkie, was abducted by al-Qaeda militants in May last year along with his wife Yolande, who was released in January.

Ib rahimovic inspires PSG to win over Ajax

Paris - Edinson Cavani has scored twice and Zlatan Ibrahimovic was also on target as Paris Saint-Germain beat Ajax 3-1 at the Parc des Princes in Champions League Group F on Tuesday.

Cavani's first-half opener was cancelled out by Davy Klaassen midway through the second half as Ajax looked set to leave the French capital with a point, but Ibrahimovic scored his first goal for his club in nearly three months to put the hosts back in front in the 79th minute.

And Cavani then made sure of the victory as PSG moved a step closer to their objective of advancing to the last 16 as group winners, the result allowing them to maintain a one-point lead over Barcelona with a trip to the Camp Nou still to come next month.

Barcelona won 4-0 away to APOEL in Cyprus in the night's other game, but with both sides already through to the last 16 before this matchday, the French champions now know that a draw in Spain next month will see them progress in first place.

The statistics make for impressive reading for Laurent Blanc's side, who have now won eight games in a row in all competitions and remain unbeaten this season, a status shared only with Chelsea in Europe's leading leagues.

PSG are also now undefeated in 32 European outings at the Parc des Princes, a record that stretches back over eight years, although Ajax could count themselves a little unlucky to return to Amsterdam with nothing to show for their efforts.

The Dutch champions, with only one player aged over 25 in their starting line-up, played the better football for long spells but, having already been eliminated before this game, can now look forward to a home game with APOEL in two weeks in which they will hope to secure the consolation of a place in the Europa League in the new year.

The loss of captain Nicolai Boilesen to injury after just 10 minutes came as a blow to Frank de Boer's side but it did not prevent them from keeping the ball for long spells inside the opposition half.

Nevertheless, a PSG side missing Thiago Silva, Thiago Motta, Marco Verratti and Yohan Cabaye fired the first real warning shot in the 24th minute.

Ibrahimovic, facing his former team, played Ezequiel Lavezzi through with just the goalkeeper to beat but the Argentine was denied by a fine Jasper Cillessen save.

Only a superb interception by Gregory van der Wiel prevented Arkadiusz Milik from closing in on goal at the other end before Paris broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark, Ibrahimovic lofting a pass over the Ajax defence for Lavezzi, who squared the ball to Cavani and allowed the Uruguayan to finish into an empty net.

That should have given the hosts a platform from which to build but instead they appeared content to try and see the game out, and were duly punished in the second half.

Tricky teenage winger Ricardo Kishna whipped in a glorious cross from wide on the left and Klaassen stooped to head low into the net past the despairing dive of Salvatore Sirigu.

Lasse Schone then curled a free-kick narrowly over for the away side but it was Paris who struck again 11 minutes from time, Ibrahimovic controlling and volleying past Cillessen from the right-hand side of the box to find the net at the far post.

And as the rain lashed down, a poor back-pass by Niki Zimling allowed Cavani to round Cillessen and make it 3-1 in the 83rd minute as he scored his seventh goal in his last seven games for the club.

Man eats an entire turkey in eating contest

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (AP) — Competitive eater Joey Chestnut has won a turkey-eating contest in Connecticut, setting a record by devouring an entire bird.
Ten contestants vied to see who could eat the most of a 20-pound turkey in a competition Saturday at Foxwoods Resort Casino.
Chestnut ate 9.35 pounds of meat off the bone in 10 minutes. According to Major League Eating, the food equivalent of the NFL, he bested the previous record, which was held by Sonya Thomas, who ate 5.25 pounds of turkey in November 2011.
Chestnut, a San Jose, California, resident who turns 31 on Tuesday, is ranked the top competitive eater in the world.
He took home a $5,000 check after stuffing his face with turkey. The remainder of the $10,000 purse was divided among other contestants.

Imo APC lawmakers reject Buhari

APC Presidential Primaries: We won’t vote for you, Imo Speaker tells Buhari

APC Presidential Primaries: We won’t vote for you, Imo Speaker tells Buhari The Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Benjamin Uwajumogu Wednesday told former Military Head of State and presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), in clear terms that delegates of the APC from the state will not vote for him in the presidential primaries.
The Speaker made the pronouncement when Buhari paid an unscheduled visit to the Imo State House of Assembly to solicit support from the APC legislators of the assembly who are automatic delegates to the presidential primaries of the party.
Speaker Uwajumogu told the former Head of State that just like most Igbo men, the Imo State House of Assembly is supporting Governor Rochas Okorocha for the APC presidential ticket but will not be voting for Buhari.
The Speaker explained that: “The perception is that APC is not an Igbo party. Hence the Assembly is joining men of goodwill and indeed the entire Igbo nation to support Governor Rochas Okorocha and by so doing prove that Ndigbo truly have a stake in the APC.”

Is Boko Haram the true cause of Jonathan’s dismal performance?

These days, there is one argument that is persistently heard when a section of Nigerians attempt to explain why the President of Nigeria Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is largely perceived as having under-performed during his four-year tenure that is running out in a few months. This negative perception is so aggravated in some quarters that some disgruntled sharp-tongued commentators simply rephrased his name in some social media outlets to read “Goodluck Ebola JoNothing” while a now deceased Facebook commentator of blessed memory once described him as “Emir El-Retard-een Jonathan”. These abuses underscoring the frustration of several hobby commentators often end up amusing the President’s opponents while it is generally taken with utmost contempt by his admirers, who cannot understand why people are taking the freedom of expression to the extent of ridiculing the country’s own President.
These days, we hear the argument that hardly anyone could have done better than this President under the atmosphere of genocidal and coercive insurgency that the northern political elite has subjected the country to. It is indeed, no secret that some northern leaders, in the run-up to the last Presidential election in 2010, vowed to make Nigeria ungovernable if Dr. Goodluck Jonathan insisted on becoming President, while the northern tenure under the zoning arrangement was cut short by the untimely death of the former President.
In fact, the rapid pace at which events have happened within the tenure of this presidency renders the chronicling of events almost impossible. Yet a fairly alert mind should be able to reflect on some events that unfurled within the past three and a half years of Dr. Jonathan’s Presidency.

It started on a very bad note when the President – in reaction to the deeply-rooted chaos in the Nigerian Football Federation (Nigeria’s governing soccer body) that saw the national team end up with a shameful performance in South Africa 2010 – disbanded the national team, dissolved the Federation and suspended international outings for two years. FIFA raised its voice a few days later and the President chickened in immediately. He had not done his homework properly and did not consult with the proper experts for advice before hastily announcing actions beyond the reach of his powers against FIFA. Boko Haram had not yet thrown a single stone, not even from a catapult.
Shortly afterwards, signs began to emerge that Boko Haram was stepping up its campaign of violence by striking at soft targets and taking scores of innocent lives. If anything, these initial actions signaled the need to address the issue head-on and as a matter of utmost priority. The President reacted and took the matter very seriously. He plunged himself into the politics of reaching out to those, who he thought mattered most and distancing himself from those, who he thought mattered less. The choice was his and his alone. He appeased them with some power-sharing arrangements, when he thought the people mattered most and offered them and their cronies, lofty government appointments. In return, he was repeatedly assured that the menace will be over not later than six months into the future. He took it all with deep satisfaction and took to assuring Nigerians with dates, by which the menace of Boko Haram would be confined to the trash can of history.
In his confidence and complacency, he turned his attention to another front. Without the requisite deep-thought, analysis of pros and cons and the need to take the bull by the horn, he lied and had his ministers lie repeatedly to Nigerians that he had no plans to remove fuel subsidy. Then on January 01, 2012 he gave Nigerians the demonic New Year’s gift of subsidy removal against all wise warnings of risking a revolution if he did. The President unwittingly responded that he was ready for a revolution. He was not taken hostage by Boko Haram at the time. Inspired by the widely reported Arab Spring, traditionally fearful Nigerians took to the streets and the President escaped a full-scale revolution by the whiskers at the cost of a few innocent lives.
In the meantime, Boko Haram’s insurgency was turning nasty and showing early signs of insurgent sophistication. His predecessor and mentor Olusegun Obasanjo offered himself for mediation – a task none of those people he appeased took upon themselves. He ended up ridiculing the former President and having his paid agents rain abuses on the old man with jeers and scorns. The choice was his.
Flashback to the subsidy protest: The nationwide uproar beamed the flashlight on the filth in the oil sector and all its attendant evils. The intelligent option of creating self-sufficiency in refining crude oil and discontinuing the regime of importing refined fuel was the final settlement that killed the nationwide semi-revolution. Investments were to be made in fixing old refineries and building new ones. A memorandum of understanding was even reached with Chinese engineering companies at the initial stage. We had no report that resources had to be withdrawn from the project to facilitate the fight against Boko Haram. No. Yet, the whole project died a quiet death while the regime of fuel importation continues unabated to the benefit of corrupt importers, who no one dares to question. Not because Boko Haram stops anyone at gunpoint! The President is simply held hostage by the corrupt power of the capital.
The speed at which the sins of people are exposed, who try to expose the scale of thievery in the oil sector underscores the excellence of President Jonathan’s government when he chooses to expose thieves. Half of the energy invested in nabbing the lawmaker Farouk Lawan’s acceptance of bribe to kill a part of his investigations on subsidy thieves was never invested in catching any of the oil thieves indicted. Yet Boko Haram did not incite this ineptitude. The mole planted in Ribadu’s committee was never planted in any NNPC body to track corrupt officers.
Bursting the Nigerian Governors’ Forum with undemocratic means had nothing to do with Boko Haram. Having the President’s wife meddle in the politics of Rivers State and attempting to have 5 lawmakers rule over 27 others in the Rivers State House of Assembly had nothing to do with Boko Haram.
The President’s only flagship project of success – the reactivation of the railway line from Lagos to Kano – was not disrupted by Boko Haram even though Kano is at the heart of Boko Haram’s operation. Yet Boko Haram is blamed for making governance difficult for the President? Boko Haram did not force the President to grant a national pardon to former Governor Alamieyesigha, who has been officially adjudged corrupt and declared an international fugitive. Today this former Governor wields far more political influence in Jonathan’s Nigeria than the cleanest of all public figures. Boko Haram did not incite the President to make lords of militant touts in the Niger Delta nor has Boko Haram stopped the arrest and public prosecution of powerful brains behind illegal oil refineries all over the Niger Delta region. Even Co-President Asari Dokubo declares openly that President Jonathan will “not dare” (repeat: “not dare”) to refuse running for re-election. “Else he can’t come back home na! E no fit!” No single comment was issued by the President to rebuke the young, exuberant slime ball. Did Boko Haram ask the President to grant that much power to a thug?
The Niger Delta insurgency did not stop Olusegun Obasanjo from negotiating away Nigeria’s foreign debt. It did not stop him from pushing through with GSM, with NAFDAC and the installation of the EFCC even if its operations were more one-sided than otherwise. It did not stop him from building 6 power stations that would have been operational today if he had more time at his disposal. And I am not alone in the belief that an Obasanjo third term would have done Nigeria far more good than this disastrous Jonathan term has done. Obasanjo did not submit to militants who undermine him publicly like Asari Dokubo does Jonathan today. Obasanjo confronted as many powerful forces as he could and they joined hands to give him a fight. Without prejudice to those areas in which President Obasanjo also had his failures, these powers it were that successfully carved out the perpetual evil image for the old man with which many people associate him today in a convenient bandwagon effect.
On the contrary, President Jonathan shied away from confronting any force that is opposed to the interest of the state except those that challenge his personal ambitions. Today, his apologists are unfortunately in a desperate search of a scapegoat for the resultant dismal failure. First it was Boko Haram. But we know today that the President did not take on the background forces to nip the tragedy in the bud and tolerated if not partially participated in propping up a version of Boko Haram. Now, they blame the Americans for failing to sell weapons to defeat Boko Haram. We now know however that the Americans only refused to sell attack helicopters that can easily be bought from Russia and scores of other sources.

Now, they are engaged in shadow-boxing over political defections. But high level defection from one party to the other is nothing new in the Nigerian democratic tradition. The overriding precedent case played out in 2007 when the Supreme Court of Nigeria validated the defection of a sitting Vice President from the ruling party to an opposing party. I am one of many Nigerians who thought – in the face of logical considerations at the time – that the Supreme Court Judges may have either been standing too tall on the high grade of intoxication or were simply drowned in their conspiracy to teach the overbearing Olusegun Obasanjo a very serious lesson. Whichever way it was, they did a serious disservice to the nascent democracy that is now hanging on the system as an albatross. The logic was simple. If for any reason then, Olusegun Obasanjo died as President, his Vice President, who was elected with and handpicked by him as a candidate of the PDP, would automatically have become the new President from another party, whose program the electorates knew nothing about and did not vote for. It was the second highest office in the land.
The lesson there was clear. Whether or not, the judgment was passed under the influence of intoxicants or emotions, and no matter how wrong the judgment was, it had definitely been passed and cannot be overturned. It is the law of the land until the constitution is explicitly amended to reflect another unmistakable reality. It therefore goes that the fact of being elected on the platform of one party should and does not automatically translate into the loss of an office upon defection to another party. It was the case with Governor Isa Yuguda, who defected from the ANPP to the PDP, Olusegun Mimiko, who defected from the Labor Party to the PDP, Governor Rochas Okorocha, who defected from APGA to the APC as well as Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who left the PDP for the APC.
I therefore wonder aloud, why President Jonathan simply refuses to accept his fate in the spirit of political sportsmanship each time a leading politician defects from his party even in these dying minutes of his presidency. The futile persecution of Governor Rotimi Amaechi does not seem to have shown the President the limits of his impunity. The same scenario is now being replayed against Aminu Tambuwal, Speaker of the House of Representatives. The botched amateurism of the Rivers State House of Assembly ended in dangerous bloodshed. It did not teach Jonathan any lesson. He sought to trick the House of Representative to re-convene under the guise of extending some worthless state of emergency only to attempt to stage-manage the impeachment of the Speaker. Now that this too has failed, efforts are said to be underway to arrest the speaker. I will dare to ask how Boko Haram has influenced this show of impunity which shows the President as constantly being petty, unintelligent and often failing to do the right thing at the right time.
But Nigeria will never be the colossal failure that it is today, if people do not routinely set the wrong agenda and priority every step of the way. Today, rather than focusing on the illegal and impuned invasion of the premises of the House of Representatives by armed policemen who would jump into the bush for safety at the shout of armed robbers, and soldiers who run away from Boko Haram, Nigerians are hurling stones at lawmakers who scaled the fence to frustrate the planned second illegality of impeachment. This should ordinarily have been a point, at which the fact of the Nigerian legislature being populated by celebrated and high-profile thugs ought to have occupied the back seat in the face of the more urgent issue of presidential impunity.
The threat by the opposition APC to form a parallel government if the presidential election is rigged is now the cry of brutal defiance by an opposition that smells a rat in the President’s extreme desperation to retain the presidency. The recipe is clear. Insurgency is already on course in the north. A brutally aggrieved opposition will render escalation an easy task. The Niger Deltans – I assume – are ready as well. Obasanjo once cried out and warned of an army being built by the President with an arsenal of lethal weapons. Is 2015 the watershed to ending the amalgamation?
Of course, Nigeria is made what it is today with the immense help of hungry and willfully collaborative praise-singers, who give incompetent politicians like President Jonathan the leverage that they need to survive and drain the stability of national interests. After all, these are the same people who conjure the fairy tale of grand performance by the President that no one else sees but they alone! It simply remains to be seen where Jonathan thinks he will be taking Nigeria and how he will end as a person and page in the history of a now dejected Nigeria.

Strike: Uyo hospital mobilises directors for skeletal service

Uyo - The management of University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) says workers at the directorate level have been mobilised to provide skeletal services following the strike by health workers.
Prof. Etete Peters, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Hospital, made the statement on Tuesday in Uyo.
He said that as the strike, which involved five unions in the hospital entered its second week; the hospital had decided not to accept new patients except those on emergency.
"We have drafted staff members from the ranks of assistant directors and above to join the doctors to attend to patients on admission and emergencies,” he said.
He said that some nurses given to humanitarian services, still turned up to check on patients on admission despite the strike.
"I have seen so many nurses not minding the strike still volunteer to come and take care of patients,” Peters said.

The CMD, who described incessant strike by health workers as 'dangerous’ said the hospital could not function effectively without the full components of its staff.
He said the hospital did not record any casualty due to the strike because limited numbers of patients were on admission.
He said that the timing for the strike was not good as the country was approaching the 2015 general elections.
Peters appealed to the striking unions to bear with the Federal Government and call off the strike in the interest of patients.
The chairman, Senior Staff Association in the hospital, Aniekan Akpan, said that the strike was nationwide.
He said members of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) were demanding adequate funding of teaching hospitals and improved welfare for workers.
An ante-natal patient at the hospital, Uduak Bassey, lamented that the strike had imposed financial burden on her family as she had resorted to private clinic. An explosion which occurred in Maiduguri, Borno State on Tuesday, November 25 has claimed 30 lives, according to reports.
Two female suicide bombers dressed in hijabs, and believed to be teenagers, detonated explosives in a crowded market in the busy metropolis.
The Borno state coordinator of the Civilian Joint Task Force, Abba Aji Kalli told the Associated Press that the first bomber blew herself up and killed about three women and while people were gathered, the second bomber screamed and set off her own bomb killing about 30.
"I am right here at the scene and I have before me 11 corpses ... many have been taken away by relatives, while others are taken to the state specialists' hospital," Kalli said.
A witness, Sani Adamu in confirming Kalli’s account told Reuters that he had counted about 30 bodies on the ground.
“While the people were trying to help the injured the second bomb blasted. I saw lots of bodies,” he added.
Security officials have reportedly cordoned the area while rescue efforts are underway. No official casualty figure has been released.

Striking burial workers in Sierra Leone have dumped corpses (not pictured) in the street over non-payment of their hazard allowances
The Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone has taken a turn for the worse as striking workers are said to have dumped dead bodies in the street in protest of the non-payment of their allowances.
The workers left about 15 infected corpses, including those of two babies, outside a hospital and a spokesperson said that they had not been paid for seven weeks.
Authorities have said that all the striking workers would be dismissed while confirming that they were indeed being owed allowances.
"Displaying corpses in a very, very inhumane manner is completely unacceptable," the spokesman for the National Ebola Response Centre, Sidi Yahya Tunis said.
Tunis also said that the money had already been released to the district health management team
"Somebody somewhere needs to be investigated (to find out) where these monies have been going," he told Reuters.
The bodies were reportedly dropped in front of the hospital to keep people from entering while, according to the head of the district Ebola Response Team, Abdul Wahab Wan, some other corpses were displayed around the hospital.
The current Ebola outbreak has claimed over 5000 lives and the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that cases are on the increase in Sierra Leone.

100 suspected al-Shabaab members killed

100 suspected al-Shabaab members killed

Nairobi - Kenyan security forces have killed more than 100 suspected members of the Islamist terrorist group al-Shabaab who were pursued into Somalia after massacring 28 people on a bus, Deputy President William Ruto said on Sunday.
At least 28 people were killed on Saturday in the bus attack, in which al-Shabaab later claimed responsibility.
Deputy President William Ruto. (AFP)Insurgents of the al-Qaeda-linked group hijacked a passenger bus in the village of Arabia in Mandera county and shot dead everyone who failed to read verses of the Koran. The hijackers drove the bus, which was bound for Nairobi, towards the Somali border, where they shot the victims in the head, authorities said.
Somali passengers were separated from non-Somali passengers before the killings, after which the insurgents fled into Somalia on foot.
"Our security responded swiftly," Ruto said in a press conference, the Daily Nation newspaper reported online. "They identified, followed and struck the perpetrators of the heinous crime."
He said that two operations were conducted against the suspected perpetrators of the bus attack.
"Our retaliatory action left more than 100 fatalities and four camps were destroyed," he said.
Ruto held the press conference in the absence of President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was on an official visit to the United Arab Emirates.
Many of the 60 bus passengers were Kenyan government officials, police officers, health workers and teachers.
Kenyan authorities had said Saturday that they launched a major ground and air operation in pursuit of the bus attackers.

Petrol price drop could have sting in its tail

Petrol price drop could have sting in its tail
Cape Town - The expected fall in the petrol price in December will certainly be good news for SA, but there is a sting in the tail, economist Dawie Roodt of the Efficient Group told Fin24 on Friday.
"The lower international price of oil is partly reflecting a weak global economy. Unfortunately a weak global economy also pushes other commodity prices down - commodities of which SA is a major exporter," explained Roodt.
Economist Rob Price of ETM Analytics agrees with Roodt and told Fin24 a drop in the petrol price would certainly  positive for consumers, producers and the economy in general, but commentators must weigh the softer petrol price against the underlying drivers of the movement in commodity prices.
"The global oil price has fallen due to weakening global growth and a stronger dollar. The weak global growth outlook is clearly not conducive to an economic recovery in SA, while a strong dollar environment may continue to pressure the rand into 2015," said Price.
"Looking through the short-term positivity of the softer petrol price there are still serious economic headwinds for the economy to endure over the coming quarters."

Setting the stage

Marius Luyt, head of public affairs at the Automobile Association of SA (AA) told Fin24 petroleum prices have dropped by more than 10% over the past 15 days and the exchange rate has weakened only slightly in the same period.
This has set the stage for yet another substantial drop in in fuel prices.
"Based on the current data, petrol is set to drop by between 69c and 72c per litre according to AA predictions, with diesel showing an expected reduction of around 49c per litre and illuminated paraffin a decrease of 43c per litre," he said.
"Statements from oil–producing countries seem to support the view that a slump in oil demand could see the trend sustained over a longer period. All indications are that motorists will have more money in their pockets at month end."
The expected further decline in the petrol price will help the inflation rate to slow and may just give the SA Reserve Bank (Sarb) some room not increase interest rates, according to Mike Schüssler of economists.co.za.
He expects the price of 93 octane could decrease by 76 cents per liter.
"The fact is that petrol will be the cheapest since May last year and in December it will have the first year-on-year decline since November 2009," Schüssler told Fin24 on Friday.
"The average motorist uses about 140 litres of petrol a month. This 199 cent decline by December will, therefore, put nearly R280 per month in the pocket of the average motorist in South Africa and with diesel declining too, farmers and truckers are going to get some serious relief," said Schüssler.
For farmers this is important as planting time is just about now.

Economic impact
"These declines honestly will help the service economy and will bring relief that is equal to a 1% cut in the prime rate for a R400 000 bond outstanding.
The R280 is close to 3% of the disposable income of formal sector employees as measured by BankservAfrica's disposable salary index.
"Having 3% more to spend at Christmas time will undoubtedly make for a better Christmas than last year for many," said Schüssler.
"We believe that GDP growth in the fourth quarter will bounce back strongly and that is mainly due to the lower petrol prices and less strike action in the main productive sectors of the economy."
"Hopefully the prices will stay low and continue to give us a boost in the first quarter. There is normally a seasonal decline of oil prices around January/February so we have a chance of even further cuts."
Other things will of course still increase in price as the weaker rand and higher electricity and water cost structure feed through the economy.
"But the savings on our current account would be close to R8.5bn and perhaps more. So SA will have a softer import bill, although lower gold, coal and platinum prices will make exports also softer," said Schüssler.
"So, the $35 dollar drop of the oil price since June is going to change the inflation forecasts, spending forecasts of households and perhaps give us better growth prospects for next year. Now if we could just fix those electricity cracks."

LIFE HISTORY OF OLAMIDE

LIFE HISTORY OF OLAMIDE

On the 15 th of March 1989 a Star was born to the Adedeji family. He was named Olamide which literarily means “Wealth has come”. No doubt that name was given to the 22 year old more in hope than certainty, well ladies and gentlemen the prophecy has come to pass. A year and some into his professional music career, Olamide has become a house hold name and just in case you don’t know who he is I suggest you google ENI DURO.  ENI DURO; the breakout single from his Debut Album has become an anthem for the streets, clubs, lecture halls and conference room.
Armed with only his pen and paper, the 300 level mass communication part time student of Tai Solarin University has released what is without a doubt an outstanding debut album. Titled RapSoDi Olamide’s 1 st offering is a 16 tracker. Sometime in 2000, Olamide decided he would like to pursue a career in music. When asked why music the Fast rising Rap Artiste says “I found out I was gifted in it so I had to explore it, it’s my life, my hustle, my world”. In 2010 fresh faced Olamide performed on arguably the biggest stage in the Nigerian Music scene; “The Hip Hop World Awards”.
Olamide’s road to fame is one for the history books, this time one year ago he was  a regular kid growing up in the Heart of Lagos Mainland; Bariga. Even though Olamide insists he is still that Bariga boy a lot haschanged in his life. Today he is Olamide a Recording Artiste signed onto ID CABASA’s CODED TUNEZ Record label and managed byIndustry heavy weight Toni Payne. Make no mistake his celebrity status was not handed to him on a silver platter, an immense amount of hard work and pure unbridled talent is responsible for the man we see today.
The un-assuming Olamide has performed at almost every major event in Lagos this year and continues to headline shows left right andcenter. What is it about Olamide that has made him a fans’ favourite? Olamide raps in a unique blend of Yoruba and English with lyrics that will leave the listener both speechless andintrigued. Olamide’s dexterityis one of the many things that endear him to his fans. One minute he is delivering his rap in fluent English and the next he switches effortlessly into Yoruba. Ambitious Olamide will tell youhe is still on his way there and if given a chance would fancy collaborations with International Superstars; Jay-Z, Ludacris, Drake,

Olamide is a Nigerian rapper. He is known for his versatilerap style, free spirited delivery and creative lyrical ability.
Born Olamide Adedeji on the 15 of March, in Bariga Lagos.Olamide fell in love with Rap music early in his primary school days.Soon, hediscovered he also had the talent to Rap and began to nurture the talent from the year 2000.He got his break after the release of the monster hit single Eni Duro in2010 and ever since, it’s been a success story all the way.
In this interview, he talks about his life, new album andworking relationship with Toni Payne.
Tell us about the reviews onyour new album Rapsodi ?
Everything has been on check, good responses; the album has been doing well onthe streets and everywhere. The first video off the album Eni Duro is great and the video for Omo To Shan with Whiz kid is almost done and then after, the plan is to shoot a couple of more videos from the album.
Why do people compare you to Dagrin?
I think it might be because I can flow well in Yoruba, if you remember when Dagrin started some people were like have you heard Dagrin he raps like Ajasa.I think withtime as people get to listen to my album they’ll understand this is Olamide and his own style. No one can be like Dagrin he was theGreatest Artistes to come outof Nigeria. I am just trying to do my own thing my own way and with the message I try topass across with my music people will start seeing me as my real self.
Tell us about your experience on the set of your video Eni Duro?
I would really love to win an award for the video cuz it took us four days to get the video done. I was really stressed out that I had to goget clothes from here and there.
Dj Tee is a very professional director; he ensures that will make use ofthe best costumes. I had to get about 40 different costumes; we eventually make use of 27 of them. It was so hectic but we thank God that the outcome was great.
How do you manage the attention you get from fans?
So far it has been fun, cool and at the same time taking me away from the everyday life I love living; like staying out on the streets, hanging out with my friends, going to eat in Bukas.Right now, I can’t go to Bukas to eat cos even when I try it my friendswill caution me.
Olamide who is presently studying Mass Communicationat the Tai Solarin College of Education also reveals that him working with Toni Payne has been really great, cos my dreams are coming true.
Any future collaboration?
Right now, there is only one person on my mind; and that is 2face Idibia; am dying to work with him

Jonathan’s Performance Below Average, Ex-President Says

Obasanjo said this on Friday, November 21, while attending one of the events lined up for the Ake Book Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

President Goodluck Jonathan and former president, Olusegun Obasanjo
President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration has again been criticized by former president Olusegun Obasanjo who described Jonathan’s performance as below average.
Obasanjo said this on Friday, November 21, while attending one of the events lined up for the Ake Book Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Obasanjo said of Jonathan:
“His performance is below average. I will not accept responsibility for his performance. There is nobody that gets such a position without being helped.”
The former president also spoke on the rumours that he had knowingly chosen Jonathan as running mate to late President Musa Yar’adua because he knew the latter was sick
“Yar’Adua told me he was well. He showed me his medical report and I even consulted experts,” he stated.
Obasanjo had previously criticized Jonathan via a long accusation-filled letter written in December 2013 and recently also accused him of destroying the middle class just like late despot, Sani Abacha.

Iraq troops battle Islamic State in Ramadi, Anbar province

raq's army has launched an operation to retake parts of Ramadi, a city largely controlled by Islamic State.
Tribal fighters take part in a military training to prepare for fighting against Islamic State in Anbar province, 15 November 2014

Saturday's fighting has focused on eastern suburbs of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, located 130km (80 miles) west of the capital Baghdad.
Iraqi officials say that during the operation, soldiers found the bodies of Sunni tribesmen killed by Islamic State for opposing the group.
IS militants - also Sunnis - have seized large areas of Iraq and Syria.
The jihadists control almost all of Anbar, despite operations by the Iraqi army backed by air strikes from the US and its allies.
Some local Sunni tribes have joined the fight against IS. Earlier this month tribal elders said hundreds of members of the Al-Bu Nimr tribe - mostly from the town of Hit - had recently been killed by IS.
The latest killings reported in the Ramadi area targeted the Al-Bu Fahd tribe. An official told Reuters news agency that the bodies of 25 tribesmen had been found in areas recaptured by the army.
The recently formed and Shia-dominated Iraqi government is trying to win over Sunni tribes, which it sees as a key element in the fight against IS.
But Baghdad has not yet succeeded in persuading the bulk of the tribes to turn on IS.

Kenya bus killings claimed by Somali group al-Shabab

Kenya bus killings claimed by Somali group al-Shabab
Gunmen from the Somali militant group al-Shabab say they have attacked a bus in northern Kenya, killing 28 people.
The bus was travelling to the capital, Nairobi, when it was stopped in Mandera county, not far from the Somali border.
Gunmen separated out non-Muslims by asking passengers to read from the Koran, officials and witnesses said. Those who failed were then shot in the head.
Al-Shabab has carried out a series of attacks in Kenya since 2011.
A statement on a website linked to the Islamist group carried a statement saying the attack was carried out in retaliation for security raids on mosques in the coastal city of Mombasa earlier this week.
Kenya's interior ministry said on its Twitter feed that a camp belonging to the attackers had been destroyed by Kenyan military helicopters and jets, with "many killed".
'Point blank' One of the passengers on the bus, Ahmed Mahat, told the BBC that there were more than 60 passengers on board when it was attacked, before dawn on Saturday, about 30km (19 miles) from Mandera town.
The driver tried to accelerate away, but the vehicle became stuck in mud caused by recent heavy rains, he said.
About 10 heavily armed men talking Somali ordered the passengers off the bus.
"When we got down, passengers were separated according to Somali and non-Somalis," Mr Mahat said.
"The non-Somalis were ordered to read some verses of the holy Koran, and those who failed to read were ordered to lie down. One by one they were shot in the head at point blank range."
Map
Some Somalis were shot after pleading with the gunmen to spare non-Somali passengers, Mr Mahat added.
Kenya's Red Cross said emergency workers were trying to retrieve bodies from the scene.
Security agencies were "in pursuit of the criminal gang" that carried out the attack, the interior ministry said. It described the assailants as "bandits".
Police chief David Mwole Kimaiyo promised a "major security operation"
A local official quoted by Kenyan media said the government had failed to answer their pleas for extra security.
"This place has been prone to attacks," county official Abdullahi Abdirahman told The Daily Nation.
"This is not the first time the government has totally ignored us, and you can now see the how many innocent precious lives have been lost."
Mr Mahat, a teacher from Mandera, said police never came to rescue people from attacks for fear of being ambushed themselves.
Mombasa raids The attack comes after a week of heightened tension in Mombasa, which has suffered a series of al-Shabab attacks.
Security forces raided mosques in the city, saying they were being used to store weapons. The raids triggered apparent revenge attacks by Muslim youths.
Kenya has experience a series of al-Shabab attacks since it sent troops to Somalia three years ago to help fight the militant group.
Mandera, a remote area in Kenya's north-east that shares a long and porous border with Somalia, has been one of the regions worst-affected by the violence.
On the Somali side of the border, al-Shabab is said to have a base that was recently bombed by Kenyan warplanes. It was not immediately clear whether this was the same base targeted by Kenya following Saturday's attack.
There was unrest in Mandera in June after two clerics accused of belonging to al-Shabab were shot dead. Residents protested that the clerics had no links to the group.

Marriage Has Made Me A Better Person- Charles Inojie

Nollywood star, Charles Inojie has indeed pitched a tent for himself in the make-believe world, thus needs no further introduction.
The Edo-State born actor who doubles as a director walked down the aisle few years ago with his beautiful wife, confessed that since he took that huge step into marriage his life hasn't remained the same.
"Being married has added all round value to my life. My wife is my number one critic and she makes it a point of duty to see all my movies as soon as they are released. No doubt I'm a better person now than I ever was."
The comic actor has also finalised plans to produce his first movies after years of directing and acting. "Yes, I am going to try my hands on producing from early next year. So your information is very correct, but we are keeping the details very close to our hearts just yet. Discussions have reached top gear with potential sponsors and I do not want to preempt anything at the moment. Let me assure my fans however, that they are in for a great experience.
Everyone knows me hitherto as the writer/movie director, but in the last four years or so, I embarked on a deliberate journey to expose the actor side of me to my teeming fans. Even though I had made minor appearances in some movies in the past, not many people knew that I was actually a lead role material. So I got to that point in my career when I could no longer continue to suppress my acting talents. I had to take the bull by the horn by going all out in front of the camera as a full-fledged actor, and believe me, the experience has been awesome.”
Charles also nodded to the fact that he has indeed paid his dues in Nollywood. “Surely, I have paid my dues in every respect. Close followers of my rise from those humble beginnings to where God has placed us today would readily concede that indeed I have paid my dues. From when I left the university as a graduate of Theatre Arts till date, I have literally navigated the lowest valleys of Nollywood right to its mountain tops. You would recall that I started out as a writer/Artistic Director, but over the years I have since earned full credits in well over 70 titles as director while appearing in leading role capacities in over 40 very successful movies.
